How did you know you wanted to be a writer?
Since I was a little girl, I had a very active imagination - too active my mother use to tell me. I had imaginary friends who lived in my bedroom closet. I remember playing cowboys and Indians with them and creating stories. I think that is why ideas for stories come easily to me. I started out writing poetry in grade school which I continued through college and still do today. But there was always the book I wanted to write, the story I wanted to tell, but it took me awhile to get there - a marriage, two kids, and a career later. I'm happy to say, I here now, finally doing the only thing I really ever wanted to do.
Why write paranormal romance?
In the beginning, it was simply going to be a romance novel called Shattered Dreams. The fundamental storyline from the initial book I started many years ago is the same but I added supernatural elements because I thought the story needed something more. At the time I was reading a lot of paranormal romance novels and wanted the antagonist to be a vampire. I read the Dark Shadows book series and watched the Dark Shadows soap opera as a child and loved Christopher Lee's vampires movies. Later, Frank Langella and Gary Oldman both portrayed Dracula as more sensual, romantic figures even though they were monsters. They were never scary to me. They were lonely, romantic souls who needed love too. I know that sounds crazy given their penchant for drinking blood and killing humans, but I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.
When did you decide to write book series?
It didn't start out as a book series. The original book Shattered Dreams was supposed to be a standalone but I got hooked on paranormal romance book series years ago and wanted to write my own. There were characters in my book I thought deserved a story of their own and started developing storylines for them. Some of the characters are vampires, but I also included other species as well to make each story unique and interesting. Shattered Dreams was twice as long as the book I'm currently publishing and I felt I had a better chance of getting it published if I divided it into two novels. Shattered is the first part of Drake and Ebony's story and Avenged is the second part and contains the Circle of the Red Scorpion origin story. I'm currently working on future books in the series and already have ideas for a spin-off series.
Why write a book series?
The reason I wanted to write a book series is that I love them. I never want to leave the characters or the stories. I do read standalone books but give me a book series every time.
